Learn more about Rolex Submariner
The Rolex Submariner is a line of luxury sports watches designed for diving. Well known for their resistance to water and corrosion, they are also one of the most recognisable and iconic watch designs in the world.
The first Submariners were produced in 1953, and then presented to watch enthusiast at the world-famous Basel Watch Fair in 1954. Nowadays, these watches could not be easily recognised as a Submariner, lacking the distinctive “Mercedes” (or “cathedral”) hands, and few of them bore the recognisable “Submariner” logo.
The 6200 Submariner produced soon after was the first to include the Mercedes hands, a feature which was from that point on present in all subsequent Submariners. “Shoulders”, the raised pieces of metal either side of the crown, which provide protection to the winding mechanism, were added almost a decade later, in early 1960s.
Nowadays, Rolex Submariner buyers start their selection with a major choice: date or no date. However, the date function was only introduced into this model in the late 60s. This improved functionality elevated the Submariner into the every day life, becoming a coveted fashion accessory as well as a highly technical, professional product.
In Rolex’s usual fashion, the next 40 years of Submariner production saw regular updates and improvements into the water resistance, movement and aesthetics of the watch.
By 2003, this culminated in the release of the Rolex Submariner Date 16610LV, celebrating Submariner’s 50th anniversary. Distinguished by a green bezel, this watch went out of production in 2010 and is a beloved piece for many watch enthusiasts.
In 2008, the Submariner received another update, this time in the form of new case, the shape of which was based on the GMT Master II case. It featured heavier lugs and crownguard and a cerachrome bezel. Updated clasp with quick adjustment was also introduced.
