We are delighted to present for sale arguably the most desirable and as close to a complete set a Rolex Explorer with the model reference 1655. This watch has undergone an extremely sympathetic restoration and a full service to its movement. The total focus from beginning to end was to keep the entire watch in its original format.
We did send the watch away to Rolex for a service however this was as we expected declined as the people at Rolex would only work on the watch if key components were replaced. Having sold vintage watches over a number of years we understand, appreciate and follow what we feel to be the best coarse of action is the keep the watch in its original format.
We sent this watch to our long established watchmaker who completed a full service to the movement and fully restored the bracelet, bezel and watch case. It is now presented in an excellent condition both cosmetically and functionally.
Following on from the success of the Explorer, in 1971 Rolex decided to add another feature to their sports watch; this time in the shape of a 24-hour indicator hand. They also increased the case size to 39mm and fitted the watch with a fixed bezel for spelunkers to indicate whether it was AM or PM. The extra hand was very large and luminous and was originally red but over time turned orange, hence the “orange hand” nickname.
This version comes set in an unpolished stainless steel Oyster case and features a MK II original dial. It is black with contrasting white minute markers and additional Tritium vintage aged creamy markers at 2.5mins and 5mins. The white hands are also fitted with matching aged lume and is one of the most legible watches Rolex ever produced. The dial is finished off with the date feature at 3 o’clock and the striking Orange hand to indicate day/night. The watch is fitted with acrylic plexi-glass and is powered by the calibre 1575 automatic movement and comes fitted on a stainless steel Oyster link bracelet with a folding clasp.
As shown in the detailed images this watch is supplied as shown in the images with both of the inner and outer Rolex boxes, one previous Rolex service dated February 2004, one Rolex swing tag, a Rolex Oyster manual, a Rolex Explorer manual, a Rolex warranty manual, a Rolex warranty booklet holder/wallet and the original Rolex hole punched certificate dated January 1981. I purchased this watch directly from the one owner from new.

Its always a bit daunting when dealing by post and with someone you have not previously dealt with.
